Illuminated letters
Want to draw attention to your company or product? Or perhaps you want to create an unforgettable experience for all your guests at the event? Lighting is a surefire way to achieve this. Illuminated letters with glowing elements either on the outside or inside will make your signage highly visible from a distance. We offer several different techniques for such sign production.
Illuminated letters materials: 3 solutions for various purposes
The final appearance and properties of illuminated letters largely depend on the choice of base material. Therefore, before placing an order, it’s important to consider how you want the letters to look: transparent with internal lighting, matte or shiny, with front or back lighting. The 3D Sign Factory team develops dimensional letters from materials specially chosen for durability, light transmission, and weather resistance.
Foam-based dimensional illuminated letters: lightweight and strong
One of the most frequent requests from our customers is for large-scale signs that don’t put a strain on the facade and, of course, last as long as possible. High-density foam plastic illuminated letters are perfect for all these tasks. They are manufactured using injection molding and feature hollow structures with channels for lighting elements.
To work on this type of lettering, we use Artek, an extruded polyethylene-based compound. This material performs well in both indoor and outdoor applications. It is impact-resistant and meets all UL flammability requirements for illuminated signs. Unlike aluminum letters, which can deform and corrode over time, these foam-based letters retain their appearance even after many years of exposure to the elements.
For example, such illuminated signs have been installed on the facades of a restaurant chain on the Florida coast for over five years. They are not affected by frequent winds or heavy use.
Acrylic face letters: maximum light visibility
A transparent acrylic surface helps make the sign glow more intensely. This design allows for maximum light diffusion from the built-in LED elements without hotspots or dark zones. We offer two basic configurations of acrylic illuminated letter signs:
- Clear transparent acrylic – for simpler signs. This option is available in 8 colors optimized for LEDs: white, yellow, blue, light green, red, red-orange, and orange.
- Transparent acrylic with vinyl overlays — allow you to create multicolor designs. A craft brewery used this technique for its illuminated letter B signage, applying translucent vinyl to create a hop-shaped logo within the letter itself the letter itself: the front glows white, while the logo glows forest green.
Metal illuminated letters for premium projects
Do you want an elegant yet understated sign for your facility without excessive brightness? Illuminated letters made of stainless steel will create the effect you need. The metal body remains opaque, while LED modules installed on the back panel create a glowing outline around each letter.
That’s exactly the design option that a large technology company ordered from us. Matte stainless steel letters A and M with warm white backlighting were used for the headquarters lobby. During the day, this abbreviation looks like a piece of sculptural art, and when evening comes, it turns into an attention-grabber for people sitting in the reception area.
Illuminating methods: how light transforms letter design
Lighting elements inside the sign letters can be arranged in several ways. This, to a large extent, depends on the type of basic material and transparency. Our experts will also assist you in selecting the best option for each specific case.
Front-lit channel letters: everything shines
In front-lighted letters, LED modules are encapsulated within the letter can, projecting light through its transparent front. Front lighting provides maximum visibility from long distances, and it is preferred for storefront displays and building signs.
In standard front-lit letters, we use energy-efficient LED modules spaced at intervals to ensure uniform brightness across the entire letter face. Denser plastic channels create a softer, matte glow effect. The translucent acrylic surface acts as a diffuser, eliminating individual LED points and maximizing light output.
Backlit (halo) letters: add a touch of intrigue
Halo-illuminated letters are mounted a short distance from the wall, with LED modules projecting light backward to create a glowing outline effect. The surface of the letters themselves does not emit light: the visual effect is created solely by the luminous halo surrounding every symbol. Here, you can choose between opaque plastic or stainless steel casings, depending on how you want it to look during the day.
This approach works especially well in high-end interiors: luxury stores, fine dining restaurants, corporate reception areas, and upscale residential spaces.
Halo letters require particular attention to mounting depth and wall surface preparation. The letters are usually installed 1.5-2 inches from the wall using standoff studs. The halo effect is greatly influenced by the texture and color of the wall: the “halo” looks brightest on smooth, light-colored surfaces.
Combined lighting: face and halo
For maximum visual impact, some installations combine front and halo illumination. The letter face glows while simultaneously projecting a halo effect. This double-illumination creates exceptional depth and presence – particularly effective for large-scale architectural installations where the signage must command attention from significant distances.
This double illumination works especially well for large signs on tall building facades.Such illuminated letter signs will attract attention from a long distance.
Signs and other roles: where illuminated letters can be used
The first association that comes to mind with illuminated letters is, of course, shop and café signs. Conveniently, such signs often don’t require any complex fonts or additional flourishes: the glow effect alone is sufficient. But that’s not the only way illuminated letters can be used. Here are some other occasions where they would look great:
- At corporate events and private celebrations (weddings, anniversaries, etc.). For example, 6-foot illuminated letters in the form of initials can be placed at the head of the table. And the inscription “Sweet 16” can decorate the photo zone of the party. Such decorations are a great solution not only for the guests of honor, but also for the organizers. Inscriptions with universal content, such as “Happy Birthday,” can be purchased by event agencies and then reused for events by renting them out.
- In office design. Lighted letters become architectural elements that define the space. In addition to the illuminated sign in the lobby, letters can be used for signage and decorative lighting at the same time.
- In residential design – a subtle yet very original solution. Combinations of illuminated letters can decorate the living room or dining room. For example, voluminous illuminated letters “e”, ‘a’ and “t” will be a worthy replacement for traditional decorations above the dining table.
- Showcases and points of sale – to draw attention to featured products, seasonal promotions, or brand messages. Investing in reusable illuminated letters will be more cost-effective than printing seasonal graphics.
Weather is no obstacle: illuminated letters for indoor and outdoor use
One of the key benefits of our illuminated channel letter signs is that they are truly all-weather products. In production, we use materials and manufacturing methods developed with environmental impact in mind:
- Water cannot penetrate the letter casing. Our standard design includes sealed seams, weather-resistant gaskets, and properly-positioned weep holes that allow condensation to drain away without affecting electrical components.
- The casing material will not fade in the sun or crack from prolonged exposure. The Artek plastic used in injection-molded letters and acrylic surfaces both contain UV inhibitors that preserve color accuracy for years of sun exposure.
- The housing material remains stable in both extremely high and extremely low temperatures. These letters can even be used at ski resorts: they can withstand snow loads, severe frost (-20 °F), intense UV radiation at high altitudes, and sudden temperature changes, while still functioning flawlessly season after season.
- All of our LED modules, transformers, and wiring are UL certified, meeting strict safety standards for outdoor electrical signage.
Indoor installations feature the same durable construction while opening additional creative possibilities. Without worrying about weather conditions, designers can specify thinner letter profiles, explore more finish options, and integrate letters into tight architectural spaces.
Low-profile lite-formed channel letters are only 2.5 inches deep, making them ideal for indoor locations where traditional 5-inch channel letters are too bulky. This slimmer profile is ideal for reception areas, hallways, and behind-the-counter installations. The reduced depth doesn’t compromise lighting quality; LED-optimized translucent surfaces provide excellent brightness and even light distribution.
Why partner with 3D Sign Factory for illuminated letter projects
Price is just one of many factors to consider when ordering illuminated channel letters. The experience and capabilities of the contractors play an important role in the selection process. And 3D Sign Factory is a true champion in this regard. For more than 20 years, we have been creating different types of signs for a wide variety of projects. And we work closely with each client throughout the entire project.
Maximum customization + engineer precision
Every illuminated letter we produce undergoes thorough quality control. Our injection-molded letters achieve their precision thanks to the same tooling processes used in the aerospace industry: each letter is dimensioned to within thousandths of an inch. This technique eliminates the need for complex on-site adjustments.
For custom letter designs, we adhere to the same engineering standards, accommodating virtually any font, size, or configuration. You can be confident that even small letters will be clearly legible when illuminated. Finish options aren’t limited to color. Metal finishes (matte gold, polished silver, copper, bronze) add aesthetic appeal.
Full LED integration: tested and balanced
Illuminated letters purchased as ready-made LED kits are delivered ready for final installation. No on-site assembly of lighting components is required. We pre-install the LED modules on Lexan backing panels, balance the circuits, test the entire system, and include the appropriate transformers designed for the specific set of letters.
This comprehensive approach eliminates typical installation problems. Each letter has color-coded connecting wires, pre-drilled mounting holes, and complete connection instructions. As a result, an electrician can complete a typical storefront installation in a matter of hours rather than days, reducing labor costs and business downtime.
